Daniel Cormier Calls For Curtis Blaydes – Jon Jones Fight

Due to the fact Jon Jones is widely regarded to be one of the greatest fighters ever, if not the greatest, many believe his first bout at heavyweight will also be a championship fight.

But, after Curtis Blaydes was pulled from UFC Vegas 15, and a fight with Derrick Lewis, Daniel Cormier is proposing ‘Bones’ fight ‘Razor’.

Cormier pitches Blaydes versus Jones

Blayes was scheduled to fight Lewis last weekend, in what was a pivotal fight at heavyweight. But, not long before the card was set to take place, it was announced Blaydes had tested positive for COVID-19.

Since then, the consensus has been that the UFC will look to rebook Blaydes – Lewis for early 2021. But, while talking with Ariel Helwani for ESPN, Cormier pitched this (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“Move Blaydes to Jones, Lewis to (Jairzinho) Rozenstruik” Cormier said. “Those are two real good fights. It makes all the sense in the world because one, Jones beats Blaydes, nobody will ever say he doesn’t belong at heavyweight.

Blaydes beats Jones, now he has beaten the greatest of all time in people’s mind going up to heavyweight; he’ll get his title shot right away. I think that’s what you should do.”

“Derrick’s gonna get taken down by Curtis Blaydes over and over again. It’s what’s gonna happen, but if Derrick fights Jairzinho Rozenstruik, they’re gonna be standing and banging in that small octagon.

This makes all the sense in the world.”

In addition, Cormier also had this to say about his rival

“Jones’ heavyweight debut needs to be a main event,” Cormier said. “Put him in the pay-per-view the month before Ngannou (vs.) Stipe. …

If Jon Jones is fighting in the main event, it’s a pay-per-view. Belt or no belt.”

Does it make sense?

So, does Cormier’s proposal here make sense?

Now, sure, there’s likely a lot of hardcore fans who would be fascinated to see whether Jones could deal with Blaydes’ powerful takedowns and ferocious top game. Jones has great wrestling himself, and was able to shut down Cormier’s takedowns.

But, Blaydes is considerably bigger and more powerful than Cormier.

All that aside, however, the chances of the UFC moving forward with Blaydes – Jones are likely slim to none.

It’s not a fight that would generate nearly as much interest as Jones versus Miocic or Ngannou. So, the UFC almost certainly doesn’t want to run the risk of having Jones’ heavyweight run spoiled early on, by the wrestling game of Blaydes.

It’s also difficult to imagine Jones or his management being on board with this bout.
