Just one day after Anthony Pettis announced he’s parted ways with the UFC, and signaled his run with the promotion was likely done, he has signed with the Professional Fighters League.
The 33-year-old Pettis finished his UFC deal last weekend at UFC Vegas 17, by scoring a decision win over Alex Morono. Leading up to the fight, Pettis revealed the bout was the last on his contract and that he planned to test free agency.
After the win, Pettis said he was going to take some time to consider his next move.
On Tuesday, Pettis announced he was a free agent and he also thanked UFC President Dana White and the UFC for his time with the company. Due to this, it certainly looked like Pettis wasn’t planning to return to the UFC.
Well, on Wednesday, the PFL announced the promotion has added Pettis to its roster.
In a press release from the PFL, Pettis was quoted saying this.
“I am really looking forward to this next big challenge after signing with the PFL to compete in the lightweight division.” said Pettis.
“I’m super impressed with what the PFL has built, how they are growing the sport, and the amazing talent they have added.
I’ve been watching the Brazilian guy [Natan] Schulte who is the champion and he is really good but there isn’t anyone I’m scared of.
“The season format is great; I think it will be an amazing new journey for me and to get to wrap it up over the course of one year will be awesome.
I can’t wait to get another world championship to add to my collection.”
And, Peter Murray, CEO of the Professional Fighters League was quoted saying the following.
“I am excited to announce that the PFL has signed two-time world champion, Anthony Pettis. Not only is Anthony a transcendent athlete within the sport of MMA, but he is also an innovator in the cage who is known for his charismatic fighting style and determination to win.
I am confident that Anthony will bring that ‘wow’ factor into every matchup he participates in over the course of our season format, and we’re excited for him to join the PFL family.”
As we get closer to the start of PFL’s 2021 season, we are looking forward to showcasing Anthony’s talents on ESPN and around the world via PFL’s global distribution network.”
As noted above, the fact Pettis isn’t returning to the UFC is no surprise, given his recent comments. Further, not long ago, UFC President Dana White said the UFC was planning to make as many as 60 cuts to the roster, and the consensus is that’s to make room for younger, less expensive fighters.
What is somewhat surprising, however, is that Pettis didn’t sign with Bellator. Since his younger brother Sergio competes for Bellator, there was an expectation Pettis could sign there.
Now it will be interesting to see how Pettis does with the PFL, which is also broadcast on ESPN.
