Daniel Cormier Thought About Fighting Jan Blachowicz For “15 Minutes”

When Daniel Cormier announced he was retiring this past summer, he said a key reason was because no title fights were on the horizon. Well, as it turns out, a few weeks ago, Cormier thought about returning to the Octagon for a showdown with the new light heavyweight champ, Jan Blachowicz.

Those thoughts, however, soon passed.

Cormier thought about fighting Blachowicz for “15 minutes”

Leading up to Cormier’s third bout with Stipe Miocic at UFC 252 in August, he repeatedly said it would be the last of his career. Since Cormier remains a top-tier fighter, however, a lot of people, including Dana White, weren’t certain ‘DC’ would stay retired.

Well, after Blachowicz put away Dominick Reyes in September, Cormier was asked for his take on how the new champ would do against Jon Jones. Cormier made it clear that he favored Jones in that match-up, and that prompted Blachowicz to challenge ‘DC’ as well.

More recently Cormier spoke with MMA Fighting, and the 41-year-old revealed the following.

“I’ve got to be honest. When Jan Blachowicz was like ‘hey, you want to disrespect me, get off the couch and come fight me.’ And I think to myself maybe I’ll go fight Jan Blachowicz,” Cormier said.

“I’ll go fight him and get this done and then I can walk away.

“That lasted about 15 minutes and then I completely understood that I was completely done.”

“…Obviously every great fighter feels they can win,” Cormier explained. “I was like ‘maybe I’ll go fight Jan Blachowicz’ cause there seems to be a path for that.

When I left 205, I just kind of left. I vacated the title and now that this new champion is there with not that many big name fights on the horizon.”

Cormier also noted that the thought of cutting back to 205 pounds, wasn’t overly attractive.

“I thought about that for like 15 minutes and then I was like you know what? I’m good,” Cormier said with a laugh. “The thought of going down to 205 [pounds] and all this other stuff.

Yeah, I think I’m fine. That was it.”

Not surprising

So, both sides of Cormier’s comments here aren’t surprising. ‘DC’ is an intense competitor, so the fact he thought about returning to take a shot at reclaiming the 205 crown isn’t shocking at all.

Neither is the fact that after giving it some though, he decided against. Especially since it would have involved him returning to light heavyweight for the first time since January, 2018.
