Rock Legend Eddie Van Halen Passes Away At 65 After Private Battle

The music world is in mourning today after the legendary rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen passed away. He was 65 years-old.

Eddie Van Halen’s Death Confirmed By His Son Wolf

Van Halen’s only son and youngest bandmate, Wolf (born Wolfgang William Van Halen), confirmed his dad’s passing on Tuesday.

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” Wolf wrote in a statement on Twitter.

“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on stage and off stage was a gift,” Wolf added. “My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

Eddie Van Halen’s Private Cancer Battle

Van Halen had been battling cancer over the past few years.

Back in 2015, the rocker told Billboard magazine that he’d had one-third of his tongue removed because of cancer, which had already spread to his esophagus.

“I used metal picks — they’re brass and copper — which I always held in my mouth, in the exact place where I got the tongue cancer,” Van Halen said five years ago.

“Plus, I basically live in a recording studio that’s filled with electromagnetic energy,” he continued. “So that’s one theory. I mean, I was smoking and doing a lot of drugs and a lot of everything. But at the same time, my lungs are totally clear. This is just my own theory, but the doctors say it’s possible.”

A True Rock Legend

Known for his unforgettable guitar solos, Van Halen took his band to the top of the charts in the late 1970s upon the release of his band’s self-titled album.

The band’s greatest success was the iconic record “1984,” which includes such hits as “Panama,” “Jump,” and “Hot For Teacher.”

Van Halen’s band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and he is one of the top 20 best-selling artists of all time.

Eddie Van Halen’s bandmate Sammy Hagar, who the late guitarist had a contentious relationship with at times, released a brief statement paying tribute to him.

“Heartbroken and speechless,” he tweeted. “My love to the family.”

Remembering Eddie Van Halen

Van Halen was previously married to “One Day At A Time” star Valerie Bertinelli, who he divorced in 2007. He is survived by their son Wolf, as well as by his second wife, Janie Liszewski.

Van Halen is also survived by millions of fans who will miss him dearly.
