Former UFC Title Challenger Ray Borg Announces Retirement

The last couple of years have been challenging ones for Ray Borg and his family, and now the former flyweight title contender’s announced he’s retiring at the age of 27.

A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that Borg had been released by the UFC, bringing an end to his six year run with the promotion. At the time, the talented grappler said this:

“I guess it’s time to break some silence. 6 wild years with the UFC, I have experienced some highs and lows during this time. Sean Shelby, Mick Maynard and Dana white have actually treated me insanely good and have given me so many chances to get my shit together and i failed to do so. Over the last 2 1/2 years my wife and I have gone threw so much, so much that most people couldn’t even understand how we get through the day. From our first born child being at risk everyday for brain surgery, to having to gain custody of a very troubled 8 year old little girl. Unfortunately I have let all these struggles effect me during some of the most important times in my career. I am gutted to part ways with the ufc but I am also grateful for all the cool experiences I have taken part of over the years. I have some physiological shit I need to figure out before I know what my next move is, so this is not a goodbye post but rather a temporary pause until I can come back better. Just want to thank my team for standing with me threw all this and having my back, also want to thank my manger Ali for always having my back, no matter how hard it has been he has always been there for me. I’ll be back.”

But, more recently, “The Tazmexican Devil” announced the following.

“Been in this game for a solid 14 years, never did I think retirement would come at the age of 27 but some decisions are harder than others and I have to make sure I am making the right one for my family. I appreciate all the love the MMA community has shown my family over the years but it may be time to move on to the next chapter of my life. Much love everyone!”

Reaction?

When you consider all the challenges Borg and his family have faced, on account of the fact his son’s been diagnosed with the brain condition hydrocephalus, this news isn’t that surprising. Borg had to withdraw from a couple of fights on account of his son’s medical issue.

Borg joined the UFC in 2014, and stunned many in the MMA world, by almost defeating longtime contender, Dustin Ortiz. Borg went 5-1 in his next 6 fights, and was tapped for a title fight with then champion, Demetrious Johnson in 2017.

Borg lost the bout via submission in the fifth round, but hung in there with one of the greatest fighters ever.

Following that, Borg went 2-2 in his next 4 bouts, and he finished his career with a record of 13-5. All the best to him and his family moving forward.
