Tyron Woodley Says He’s at “Peace” Following One-Sided Loss, Leon Edwards Takes Poke at Former Champ

Tyron Woodley’s bid to reclaim the UFC’s welterweight title was dealt a massive blow on Saturday night. But, after the pivotal loss, the former champ reported he’s at “peace”.

Woodley wasn’t the only person to comment on his loss, as the man he was supposed to fight in March, Leon Edwards, fired a verbal jab at the decorated fighter.

Woodley comments on one-sided loss

Heading into UFC Vegas, a lot of people predicted that Gilbert Burns could present some issues for Woodley. After all, Burns has been on a massive tear, he’s ridiculously dangerous on the ground and his striking continues to improve exponentially.

But, few people called what transpired: Burns outscored Woodley from the opening horn, and proceeded to win all five rounds, clearly.

It was a massive defeat for Woodley, as he was competing for the first time since last March, when he lost the title to Kamaru Usman. But, while commenting on his performance afterward via Instagram Live, Woodley said this (quotes via MMA Mania).

“Like I said, you can’t just get on the camera when you win, you gotta get on the camera when you lose too,” Tyron said. “I felt good. I have no excuses. I felt good.

I train hard. I was in great shape. I felt like I did everything right. Everything felt good from the walkout to the stretch, to every single thing about the fight.

I looked him in the eyes yesterday and knew he was going to be ready to fight which I thought that was good. He did a good job of keeping the distance, not coming at the shots and I felt like I was reaching.”

“I just wanted to come and face you guys because … I don’t understand, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, it’s not very clear … I just know I’ve got to trust God. I’ve got a weird peace for somebody who just got their ass whooped.

I don’t know why I am at peace … not with losing, not with defeating, not with losing to Gilbert. Gilbert came out and did his thing.

At the end of the day, it wasn’t a situation like the Usman fight where I just felt like I wasn’t there.

I was there. I was present. I was responding. I heard what my coaches were saying. I just couldn’t get my hands on him.”

“I can take that,” Woodley said. “I can take a loss when I feel like I was present in my mind and body. Several times I could have just gave up, and that f**ker hit me with some s**t, I ain’t gonna lie.

He hit me with a couple things, two, three, four of em. And I felt em, but it wasn’t enough to make me quit.”

It will be interesting to see where Woodley goes from here. Since he’s 38, he’s likely short on time, in terms of making another title run. Can he do it?

Edwards piles on Woodley

Woodley had been scheduled to fight Leon Edwards next, until the COVID-19 pandemic forced UFC London to be cancelled. After Saturday’s headliner, Edwards took this poke at the former champ.

Props to burns good win.
Woodley talks to much should focus on fighting not talking.
@USMAN84kg
I’m ready when you are @ufc @espn
I’m ready to go, airports are open in the uk.

It would be surprising if Edwards was tapped to fight Usman next. But, you never know. Talks for Usman – Jorge Masvidal have reportedly hit a snag.
