Gilbert Burns demonstrated that he’s a contender and then some in the welterweight division tonight at UFC Vegas, as he cruised to a win over former champ, Tyron Woodley.

Round one

Burns charged out and started to pressure. Burns fired a couple of leg kicks and in an ensuing exchange, Woodley went to the deck. Burns moved into full mount. A bloodied Woodley defended a guillotine attempt. Burns continued to work from the top position but Woodley exploded up and out.

Woodley fired in a right hand that just missed. Burns planted another leg kick and followed up with a kick to the body. The cut above Woodley’s left eye is quite large.

Round two

Woodley fired some heavy punches to begin round two. Burns continued to move forward as Woodley looked to counter. Mid round, Burns changed levels and scored with a brilliantly timed takedown. Woodley worked back to his feet but ate a couple of shots on his way up. The welterweights battled in the clinch along the fence.

Round three

Burns continued to move forward in the third frame. Burns tagged Woodley with a nice right a couple of minutes in. Moments later he threatened with another huge right. The welterweights started talking to each other with a couple of minutes left in the round. Burns landed another hard leg kick. “Durinho” continued to be the aggressor as the round finished up.

Round four

Woodley is likely down three rounds heading into round four. Burns tried taking Woodley down moments in, but the former welterweight champ defended. The fighters clinched up but eventually, the fighters were separated by referee Herb Dean. Burns continued to move forward and was the busier of the two fighters. Mid round, Burns cracked Woodley with a right hand that rocked the former champ. Moments later, he swept Woodley to the floor.

Late in the round, Burns started hunting for a choke, but he ran out of time.

Round five

Woodley needs a finish to win this fight. Moments into round five, Burns shot in but Woodley defended the takedown.Burns clinched up and had Woodley against the fence. The fighters were separated mid round but Burns continued to be the busier fighter. The final horn went without Woodley landing any substantial shots. One sided win for Burns. Wow.
