UFC Florida: Dan Ige Spoils Edson Barboza’s Octagon, Featherweight Debut

Dan Ige moved his Octagon wining streak to six at UFC Florida, but one judge believed Edson Barboza did enough to snap his winning streak, in what was the latter’s first bout at 145 pounds.

Round one

Ige came out winging big hooks but Barboza cracked him with a beautiful right that sent him to the deck. Barboza landed some shots from above, while working from within Ige’s guard. Barboza pounded down hammer fists from the top but Ige ate them, and Barboza let him up. Ige dug a hard right to the body mid-round. Ige continued to move forward behind hard hooks. Barboza planted a thumping leg kick later in the frame and then scored with a left punch. Ige was cut below his left eye. Before the round ended, Barboza fired in another leg kick.

Round two

Barboza had swelling under his left eye as well, heading into round two. Ige came out firing huge hooks and he took a body kick in return. Ige planted another left and pushed Barboza to the cage. Barboza fired in some knees in the clinch but Ige broke free. Ige fired several more, massive hooks but took a leg kick in return. A cut on the bridge of Barboza’s nose opened up and the featherweights traded elbows.

Later in the round, Ige shot in for a takedown but Barboza defended. Barboza caught Ige with a knee and or kick to the body late in the frame that appeared to hurt him. Moments later, the fight spilled to the floor and Barboza finished the round on top.

Round three

Ige continued to move forward in round three and Barboza countered with shots to the body. Ige was still firing big hooks but Barrboza was defending well. Mid round, Barboza landed more shots to the body that Ige felt, but he returned fired with a nice right. Late in the frame, Ige charged in and took Barboza down. Close fight, but Barboza will probably take it.

Wow, Ige gets the split decision nod.
