UFC 249 has been making headlines, since the UFC is one of the first to proceed with holding events. But, the card’s also making headlines now due to the unsettling news “Jacare” Souza has tested positive for COVID-19.
The 40-year-old Souza was scheduled to fight middleweight Uriah Hall at today’s card, which is taking place in Jacksonville, Florida. But, since the Brazilian has tested positive for the virus, that fight’s been canceled.
Following the news of Souza’s positive test, the UFC released the statement below (statement via MMA Junkie).
“UFC’s medical team examined Souza and his two cornermen and found them to be currently asymptomatic, or not exhibiting the common symptoms of COVID-19.
As per UFC’s health and safety protocols, all three men have left the host hotel and will be self-isolating off premises, where UFC’s medical team will monitor their conditions remotely and will provide assistance with any necessary treatment.”
In addition to the news Souza has tested positive for COVID-19, additional concerns are being raised, after a video surfaced that shows him interacting with Fabricio Werdum.
The video was reportedly posted by Werdum, but then deleted, after news of Souza’s positive test broke. Souza is wearing a mask in the video. But, the clip is raising concerns regarding a lack of social distancing.
Hopefully everyone involved in today’s event remains healthy and safe. In the main event for UFC 249, Tony Ferguson will battle Justin Gaethje for an interim lightweight title.
