Khabib Nurmagomedov Confirms Father And “More Than 20 Close Relatives” Are Battling COVID-19

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has resumed operations, after having multiple events postponed as the results of the coronavirus pandemic. But, the family of one of the promotion’s biggest stars, Khabib Nurmagomedov, continues to battle COVID-19.

Nurmagomedov confirms father’s medical crisis is tied to COVID-19

Recently it was reported that Khabib’s father, Abdulmanap, had been hospitalized in Russia and was in a coma. The reports stated that the renowned coach was initially hospitalized due to pneumonia and that complications with his heart had followed.

More recently it was reported that Nurmagomedov had regained consciousness, but that he remains extremely ill.

In a recent video statement, Khabib posted, however, he’s reportedly confirmed that his father is in fact, fighting COVID-19. In addition, the undefeated fighter reported that over 20 of his close relatives have contracted the virus as well (translations via MMA Junkie).

“More than 20 of my close relatives have suffered (from) COVID-19 and also had to stay in intensive care. Some of them are not with us anymore,” Khabib said, as translated by two sources.

“As for my father, there’s been so much support, and people kept asking about my father.

“My father is still at the hospital. He’s still going through this disease. He also had a heart complication due to COVID-19.

Abdulmanap had surgery for his heart last year and also had the second one these days [sic], so he is still in bad condition. That’s all I can say.

“I want to thank all the people for your support, wishes and your prayers. I also wish all the best. Be safe and healthy. Thank you very much.”

What could this mean for Khabib’s 2020, fighting campaign?

So, obviously this is very unfortunate and troubling news. Hopefully, Khabib’s father and his relative all have a speedy and full recovery.

You have to wonder, however, how this might impact the timeline for Khabib’s next fight? Recently the champ said he’d be ready to complete in July, and then he reportedly told Dana White he’ll fight in September.

But, if this situation regarding his family worsens, then it’s possible Khabib’s next bout could be pushed further down the line.

Nurmagomedov is expected to face Justin Gaethje next, who won the interim lightweight title at UFC 249, by stopping Tony Ferguson.
