It’s been over five years since Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier threw hands. But, the lightweight contenders are still trading verbal shots here in 2020. Their latest exchange was over the fact Poirier’s ranked ahead of the massive star.
As it stands right now, Poirier is ranked #2 in the UFC’s lightweight division and McGregor is one spot below at #3. It’s being reported that not long ago, McGregor raised an issue on Twitter about that fact, but that he’s since deleted it.
Here is what the tweet said according to MMA Junkie.
“How is the pea ahead of me in rankings?” McGregor said. “I sparked him in 90 seconds. Went further against most recent foe, plus took a round. After two year layoff partying and or in jail/court.”
It seems clear Poirier saw McGregor’s now-deleted tweet, as he shared out this response.
“Because I’ve been fighting real contenders and you’ve been hand picking opponents.”
So who’s right here? If anyone?
It is true that McGregor took Poirier out in the opening round. But that fight took place back in 2014, so, chances are the media who determine the rankings aren’t factoring in that bout much.
It’s also true that McGregor made it one more round than Poirier did against Khabib Nurmagomedov. But, here too, that probably doesn’t get considered much in the rankings.
At the end of the day, and this what Poirier was alluding to, the determining factor here is that he’s fought seven times since 2016 and McGregor’s competed just twice. During that time Poirier’s gone 5-1, with 1 NC, and defeated all-star fighters like Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, Anthony Pettis and Eddie Alvarez.
McGregor’s only win during that stretch was against Donald Cerrone this past January.
