Blake Shelton surprises mother daughter Nurses on TODAY with "God Gave Me You"

Country music star Blake Shelton just stepped up to honor a mother and daughter duo who both are working as nurses on the frontlines fighting the coronavirus pandemic. “The Voice” star surprised the duo while they were being honored for International Nurses Day on “TODAY”. Shelton loved hearing them throw it “back to God”. So much so that he was inspired to dedicate an impromptu performance of “God Gave Me You”.

Mother And Daughter Fight Coronavirus On The Frontlines

During a virtual appearance on the “TODAY” show, Shelton surprised Sylvia Johnson and her mother Bridgette Robinson, who are both nurses on the frontline of this COVID-19 pandemic.

Mother Bridgette spent weeks on a ventilator last month fighting for her life after testing positive for COVID-19. Daughter Sylvia was working at the hospital the day her mother was intubated in the ICU.

Despite the fact that her mother’s life was in jeopardy, Sylvia continued to show up for work every day at Ochsner North Shore, a hospital outside of New Orleans. There, she became dependent on her colleagues for updates on her mother’s condition.

“It definitely was scary and heartbreaking,” Johnson told “TODAY” host Hoda Kotb. “Especially the fact that she’s my best friend.”

Mom was miraculously able to overcome COVID-19, and she has since been transferred to an acute care facility.

“It was really hard,” said a tearful Robinson. “The only thing I remember is waking up and hearing my grandson on Facebook telling me that he needs me, (saying) ‘Grandma, don’t leave me. I love you, I need you.”’

Kotb wanted to give these two an incredible surprise that they would never forget, so she enlisted the help of her good friend, “God’s Country” singer Blake Shelton.

The mother and daughter could not believe it when Shelton popped up on the screen straight from his home in Oklahoma!

“Everything about this disease, I mean, you guys are out there on the front lines fighting it, and now you’re a survivor of it,” Shelton told them. “And you’ve got each other, and that’s really what this is all about.”

The longtime “The Voice” judge went on to say “the whole time I heard you guys talking, and you keep throwing it back to God, and I love hearing you say that.”

Blake Shelton Dedicates “God Gave Me You” To Mom-Daughter Nurse Duo

“I want to dedicate this song from me to you guys as nurses, and being there on the front lines, and I think this song really speaks to your relationship with each other if you ask me,” Shelton continued before singing his hit song, “God Gave Me You.”

As soon as Shelton began to sing, Robinson could not help but burst into tears. After all that she had been through in the past few weeks, this was truly a powerful moment.

There are tons of singers and Hollywood stars who talk a big game. But yet they’re clearly just focused on themselves during this pandemic.

It’s nice to see someone as famous as Blake Shelton be so down-to-earth. And generously give his time and talent to do something kind for the real heroes of this pandemic.
