If UFC 249 does take place on April 18th, Santiago Ponzinibbio’s announced he’s willing to fight Tyron Woodley at the event, even though he hasn’t apparently been training. Not only that, the surging welterweight says he could wreck the renowned welterweight, even if with “one arm tied” behind his back…
Ever since Woodley’s March 21st bout with Leon Edwards fell through, because UFC London was cancelled on account of the coronavirus, he’s been driving to fight at UFC 249. Specifically, Woodley has been hoping to land a fight with his rival, Colby Covington.
Well, Ponzinibbio’s taken notice of Woodley’s campaign, as recently the Argentinean fighter told MMA Fighting this.
“Just saw on the media that Tyron Woodley is saying he’s ready to fight at UFC 249, that he’s training and ready to do the main event, so I’m here,” Ponzinibbio said. “I’m ready to take this fight. I’d be happy to do this main event and knock him out in the first round. This is my fight. In two weeks, I’m in.”
“He’s asking for Colby Covington but he’s not ready, he fractured his jaw. I’m ready, brother,” Ponzinibbio said. “I’m ready to beat him up.”
“I’ve been away for a while with an injury and I haven’t trained for a while. What more does he want? He only takes easy fights so I’m coming off an injury, which is great for him, but I’ll still beat the sh*t out of him and knock him out in the first round.”
“I’m not training, I’m away for a year and a half, there are no other advantages I can give him,” he continued. “I’ll fight with one arm tied behind my back if he wants, and I’ll still beat the sh*t out of this guy and knock him out in the first round. Let’s see if he’s man enough to take this fight.”
Now, the debate regarding whether the UFC should be holding any events right now, on account of the pandemic, you have to admire Ponzinibbio’s willingness here. If he in fact, hasn’t been training, you would think he’d be a huge disadvantage going up against one of the best welterweights of this generation, with no camp. Woodley, meanwhile, has been in training mode for a while (since he was supposed to fight Edwards last month).
But, would Woodley be on board with fighting Ponzinibbio? If Woodley is really keen to fight, it’s possible sure. But, when you consider Ponzinibbio is currently ranked in the top 15 (despite a seven-fighting winning streak), Woodley doesn’t have much to gain, other than a check.
