Tony Ferguson

Following the news that the California State Athletic Commission will not be overseeing UFC 249, which is expected to take place close to Lemoore, California, The Association of Boxing Commission and Combative Sports is reporting it will sanction the event.

ABC confirms UFC 249 will be sanctioned

Recently it was reported that the April 18th, UFC 249 card will take place at the Tachi Palace Resort and Casino, which is located on tribal land close to Lemoore. But, since officials are advising against any type of combat sports event being held, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the CSAC announced it will not regulate the card.

Since then, however, ABC president Brian Dunn told MMA Fighting this.

“After speaking with UFC officials, the ABC board of directors determined this event could be listed as sanctioned,” Dunn said. “When the UFC does international events, they regulate themselves using Nevada Athletic Commission inspectors, and this event on sovereign land is no different.”

“I was told that in addition to all usual medical testing requirements, they would screen everyone for COVID-19, have additional doctors and had made pre-arrangements with the nearest hospital to assure the immediate treatment of injured athletes.”

So, it will be interesting to see how this news is met by the event’s critics, who have argued the UFC should not be holding any events right now, on account of the pandemic. The location for UFC 249 has yet to be officially announced.
