Justin Gaethje has had some fiery words for the UFC and Dana White in the past. But after agreeing to fight at UFC 249 on short notice, only to see the card canceled, Gaethje is praising the UFC President.

Gaethje releases statement

After it became clear that Khabib Nurmagomedov was not going to be able to attend UFC 249, due to coronavirus travel ban that stranded him Russia, the UFC scrambled to find a new headliner. Gaethje was asked to fight Tony Ferguson for an interim lightweight title on short notice, and the former WSOF champ agreed.

Ultimately, however, the event was canceled. After various officials spoke out against the card taking place, due to the pandemic, ESPN asked the UFC to postpone the event.

More recently, Gaethje released the following statement regarding the situation.

I really felt a surge of energy and support as this fight was building up from so many ppl across the world, it was very humbling. I am thankful to represent Safford, AZ and my great friends and family. I’m going to be working hard to be ready next time the opportunity arises. Let’s get through this fight we are all facing right now by having a positive impact on our immediate surroundings (family, neighbor, community) Thank you!! The boss @danawhite is someone I am proud to do business with. #ufc249

What’s next for Gaethje?

Now the question is, what’s next for Gaethje? One would think the UFC will look at rebooking Nurmagomedov – Ferguson for later this year. If that’s the plan, then maybe the promotion will revisit Conor McGregor versus Gaethje?

Before UFC 249 fell through, it was reported that the UFC was looking at adding that fight to its summer schedule.

Although, since Khabib will observe Ramadan soon and won’t be ready to fight until late summer, you never know. Maybe the UFC will look at moving forward with Ferguson vs. Gaethje if the opportunity arises?
