Kamaru Usman has established himself as on the of best fighters on the planet during his UFC. But, Jorge Masvidal says he has no doubt that he’s going to end Usman’s reign as the welterweight champ.

Not only that, “Gamebred” insists that Usman will not out-grapple him if and when they fight.

Masvidal’s willing to bet his “life” that Usman won’t beat him

For several months now, all signs have been pointing to Masvidal fighting Usman next. Prior to UFC 246, Masvidal pushed for a bout with Conor McGregor.

But, since McGregor quickly took out Donald Cerrone, all the talk regarding his next bout has been tied to lightweight bouts. In addition, Dana White said the plan is to have Masvidal challenge Usman next, sometime this summer (of course, that will depend on what happens with the coronavirus).

Well, more recently Masvidal spoke with BT Sport. While talking about how he sees a fight with Usman unfolding, the dangerous fighter said this (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“He’s a boring-ass dude,” Masvidal said. “If I’m speaking from a straight tactical point, he’s not going to want to strike, and he doesn’t really fully commit to wrestling either.

All he fully commits to is stalling. Just being a (expletive) stall machine. For the first time, he didn’t stall with this guy (Covington), and it was a (expletive) kickboxing match, and the world gave him all types of praise for it because he wasn’t his usual, boring self, and he actually threw some fists.

“But we all know he’s not gonna throw fists when it comes to me, he’s gonna try to act like he’s gonna throw fists and then he’s gonna go for the takedown, and he’s going to quickly find out I’ll never get held down by that guy.

I won’t get out-grappled by that guy. I’ll put my life on it, I’ll put my money on it. I’m in the firm belief system that I’m a better fighter than him and I’m going to prove it in July.”

Will Usman look to take it down?

So will Usman look to take the bout to the floor? Probably. While Usman has underrated striking, in a fight against Masvidal, his clearest path to victory would be via his wrestling.

And will he be able to take Masvidal down? When you consider Usman’s wrestling pedigree, and the fact he averages 3.4 takedowns per fight, it’s pretty likely. Masvidal was taken down several times by Demian Maia and few would argue that Usman is a better wrestler.

That said, the bout went down in2 2017. So, Masvidal’s wrestling defense is probably better now. The big question is, however, can he keep Masvidal on the ground?

It’s going to be a fascinating bout to watch if and when it happens.
