Since UFC Norfolk did not end up crowing a new flyweight champ, there’s been debate and discussion whether the UFC might shutter the 125 division. But, recently UFC President Dana White said the promotion is looking at booking a rematch between Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo.

White outlines why he thinks a rematch should happen

The flyweights were booked to fight for the 125 title on February 29th, which Henry Cejudo announced he was relinquishing not long ago. Figueiredo missed weight for the bout, however, and as a result, he was ineligible to win the belt.

In the bout itself, Figueiredo proceeded to finish Benavidez with a couple of punishing punches in round two. But, the final flurry took place right after the fighter’s clashed heads, and Benavidez was cut above his left eye.

Well, since the memorable fight, some have questioned whether the UFC could close the flyweight division. There’s been speculation the division is on the bubble for some time. But, while talking to the Las Vegas – Review Journal more recently, White said this (quote via Sherdog.com).

“That was a great fight,” White said. “Absolutely, I think the head butt had a lot to do with the knockout too. Not taking anything away from [Figueiredo]. I think you have to do that fight again.

“First of all, he didn’t make weight. Joe Still fought him. There was a head butt. A lot of controversy in that fight. It was a great fight. Both guys came to fight. I’m sure you know how I feel about him not making weight. We’ll do it again. They both deserve it.”

“Will it be a title fight? Yeah,” White said.

Welcome news

Now, yes, the flyweight division is struggled to gain traction with mainstream audiences since it was added by the UFC. But for big, hardcore fans, White’s comments should be welcome news. As the Benavidez – Figueiredo fight showcased, yet again, flyweight fights consistently provide fast-paced action with top-tier techniques being utilized. It would be a shame if the division was punted by the UFC.

In terms of the rematch itself, it’s hard to argue with White. Figueiredo missed weight for the bout, so Benavidez didn’t even have to take it, but he did. Further, while there’s no question Figueiredo hits hard, the headbutt almost certainly played a factor in the final moments of the bout.

Due to the headbutt, and the heavy shot Benavidez took, one would think it will be a few months before a rematch can take place.
