If you watched UFC Norfolk, you know that the ending to the Magomed Ankalaev – Ion Cutelaba fight was one of the most bizarre in recent memory. Well, not surprisingly, Cutelaba is calling for the stoppage loss to be overturned.
Cutelaba says stoppage was “one of the worst in UFC history”
Both fighters came out aggressively, firing big shots, and after Ankalaev appeared to land a head kick, Cutelaba started staggering. The latter kept winging back punches of his own, while still staggering, or acting like he was staggered. After several more moments, referee Kevin MacDonald stopped the fight and Cutelaba immediately protested the call.
Well since then, Cutelaba shared out the statement below on Instagram.
Tonight I was denied a chance to Show my work to the fans. Reffering is a very hard job and tonight a mistake took away months of hard work and possible income from my family. I know that the comission will be able to understand that this was a incorrect call and will reverse the decision. Nobody wins in a situation like this, the fans lost on watching What Could be the fight of the Night, my opponent had a contestable win that will be overturned and I had one of the worst calls in @ufc history happen Against me.
I apreciate all the support from the fans in Norfolk, back home and all ofer the world. I will be back and I believe that We will together be able to correct this injustice.
Could it be overturned?
If you’ve followed MMA for a while, you know that commissions rarely overturn a referee’s decision to stop a bout. Typically fights are only overturned due to a failed drug test. While Cutelaba insists how he acted was part of his game plan, that’s hard to definitely prove.
What should happen is a rematch.
