The XFL league started their season this past weekend, and Colin Kaepernick was arguably the most famous NFL free agent to not be playing for them. On Saturday, XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck revealed why Kaepernick has yet to be signed by the XFL.
Fox News reported that the Commissioner explained that Kaepernick’s representatives were contacted by the XFL, but they could not come to an agreement about salary.
“We gave it some thought,” Luck said. “We have some pretty significant salary restrictions, you know. We’re a start-up league, so we want to make sure that we can be fiscally responsible and fiscally prudent. And the, you know, salary requirements that some folks, you know, shared with us were in our case exorbitant, so we, you know, couldn’t go down that path.”
“We spoke with his representative and the salary requirements that were broached in that conversation were exorbitant and certainly out of our range,” he continued.
Luck went on to say that he was unsure if the XFL would change its stance on Kaepernick if he lowered his salary demands. He also talked about the league’s stance on protests during the national anthem, which they require players to stand for.

“Players have numerous opportunities to express themselves with all the platforms that exist today,” Luck said. “So, you know, standing for the national anthem we believe is a part of their responsibility as players in our league. But we think it’s important to have that — you know, that requirement for our players.”
Kaepernick was a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 when he began sitting during the national anthem. He sat to protest racial inequality in the United States. Many Americans were offended by this. They saw the behavior as an insult to not only the American flag but also those who fought and died for it.
Once the ex-NFL player changed his tactic to kneeling, other NFL players joined the protest. As a result, the NFL’s game day attendance and television ratings suffered.
Colin Kaepernick left the 49ers in 2017, and he has yet to be signed by another professional football team. Be it NFL or XFL. Given his anti-American behavior, why would Kaepernick even want to play for an American pro team?
I applaud the XFL for requiring players to stand during the National Anthem. And I, for one, hope that Oliver Luck and the XFL hold their ground on Kaepernick.
