UFC 247: Dominick Reyes Feels “Disrespected”, Knows “I Won That Fight”

Dominick Reyes has handed his first professional loss last night at UFC 247. But following his controversial loss to Jon Jones last night, Reyes proclaimed he knows that in reality, he won the fight.

Reyes comments on controversial scoring

Reyes came out winging big shots in the headliner of UFC 247, and rising star out struck Jones through the first three rounds of the entertaining fight. Jones, however, continued to press forward throughout the contest, and in rounds four and five he bested Reyes in more exchanges. The star was also finally able to take Reyes down a couple of times.

Despite Jones’ late surge, it seems like most people had Reyes winning the first three rounds. But, after the bout, it was announced the judges has scored it 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 for Jones. To say the least, Reyes was devastated by the decision, and while speaking to the media afterward he  said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I’m disappointed first of all,” Reyes said. “I am proud of myself, though. I went out there with all my heart, and the goal for me was to make it an ESPN instant classic, and I feel like I accomplished that today. I do feel disrespected. One of the judges had it 49-46. Like, who are you? I might want to have a word with you.

“But other than that, I know I won that fight. I know I won that fight. I was in that fight. I don’t have to watch the replay. I was there. I made Jon Jones look like just a man. I brought the fight to him.”

“Yeah, 3-2 or 4-1, it could’ve been either of those,” Reyes said. “I truly believe that, I’m not just saying that. I mean, look at the numbers, look how the fight played out. Those takedowns, how can you even score those as a takedown? He burned more energy trying to take me down. I just popped right up like nothing, and I elbowed him off the break.

“You’re going to do me like that? But it is what it is. All I know is that I am the truth, and people saw that tonight. Many people from the top down in this organization told me I owned that fight tonight.”

The metrics

Yup. It’s hard to argue with too much of what Reyes said here. Although the fight was close enough the case to say Reyes was ‘robbed’ might be tough. But, the 49-46 score is highly dubious. Overall, Reyes out struck Jones by a 119 to 107 margin. Jones scored two takedowns, but Reyes defended seven attempts.

Controversial decision aside, there’s no question that Reyes’ stock has risen significantly of what transpired last night.
