MMA World Will See The “Old” Conor McGregor in 2020 According to Manager

It’s been a few years now since Conor McGregor was scoring highlight reel victories and taking home UFC belts. But, the star’s manager believes we’re going to see the Conor of “old” in the coming twelve months.

McGregor’s manager says star is refocused

As McGregor gets set to fight Donald Cerrone on January 18th at UFC 246, it’s been over three years now since the Irish fighter recorded a win. That victory took place in November, 2016, when McGregor became a champ-champ by taking out Eddie Alvarez and winning the lightweight belt.

Since then, however, McGregor has dropped bouts to Floyd Mayweather and Khabib Nurmagomedov, and he’s also made headlines for various incidents and allegations. As a result, many have questioned whether the now 31-year-old fighter can climb back to the top of the combat sports’ mountain.

Well, recently McGregor’s manager, Audie Attar, spoke with the South China Morning Post. While discussing his client, and his mindset as he gets set for his 2020 campaign, Attar said this (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

”I do [believe he’ll be champion again],” Attar said. “I’ve seen a level of fire that’s been reignited within him.”

”We’ve done things that nobody ever thought we could do, from the Floyd Mayweather fight to the type of contracts that he’s been able to earn,” Attar continued. “We’re very proud of that. Those don’t come easy. But those come with a lot of, I think, distractions and things that allow you to lose sight of what was really important to you. And the one thing that’s exciting for me is to see he’s refocused, and we all need that in life.”

“Life is not linear, it’s not black or white, and we’re all gonna at times need to refocus and keep track of what’s important to us – what’s our purpose professionally, what’s our purpose personally. And I think when you keep those two things aligned and moving in the right direction together, I think you’re gonna have harmony in your life, you’re going to have happiness in your life. And that’s where he is right now. He understands who he is. He understands what his purpose is professionally. He understands what his purpose is personally. And he’s focused on achieving that.”

“…And I’m just so excited because I haven’t seen this in a couple of years and I’m telling people just sit back and you’ll see a performance of an old Conor, and I really believe that, because the work’s being put in there, and you can’t fake that.”

Could 2020 be McGregor’s year?

Now, based off what McGregor’s said in recent weeks, and through various comments from his team, it does sound like the star’s truly motivated to climb back to the top. The question is, however, whether he can get through the fighters in front of him to do that. First up is Cerrone, and then, theoretically, McGregor will need to defeat all-star fighters like Nurmagomedov, Tony Ferguson or possibly Jorge Masvidal. That’s a massive, massive challenge for anyone.
