Conor McGregor Makes History At UFC 246 With Finish

Conor McGregor loves to make history.

First, he became the only fighter – at the time – to wear UFC gold in two different weight classes when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title while also holding the featherweight belt.

His featherweight championship performance came in 13 seconds when he finished Jose Aldo.

While McGregor did not top that time Saturday night at UFC 246 vs. Donald Cerrone, he came pretty close.

“Notorious” landed with a head-kick and followed up with more power strikes, knocking out “Cowboy” in 40 seconds and shutting him out without allowing a single strike to land.

The win gave McGregor knockouts in the UFC’s featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions, a first inside the Octagon.

“I made history here tonight,” McGregor said in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “I’m the first fighter in UFC history to secure knockout victories at featherweight, at lightweight and now at welterweight. Across three divisions.

“I’m very, very proud of that.”

The win was the first for McGregor since 2016 when he defeated Alvarez, covering over 1,100 days. He lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018 for the UFC lightweight title, and also had a boxing match in 2017 against former world champion Floyd Mayweather.

While some, including UFC president Dana White, have been hesitant to proclaim welterweight McGregor’s division, the Irish fighter looked the part on this night.

“I like this weight division,” he said. “It’s good going up and down. God willing, I cam out of here unscathed. I’m in shape. I don’t believe I’m there yet, though.

“I’ve still got work to do to get back to where I was. Any one of these little mouthy fools can get it.”
