World War II Veteran Bill White who received a Purple Heart wants Valentine's Day cards

Bill White, a 104 year-old Marine Corps veteran and Purple Heart recipient who survived the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, made a public appeal asking people to send him Valentine’s Day cards next month from around the world.

Meet Bill White: WWII Vet and Purple Heart Recipient

According to Fox61, Major Bill White was awarded the Purple Heart for his courageous service and injuries sustained during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

“The fact that I even survived is something,” White explained. “There weren’t too many of us.”

White was leading his troops towards the front lines on March 3, 1945 when they came under fire from the Japanese.

“When I was wounded, I didn’t have any choice in the matter. A grenade blew up about 6 inches from me,” he recounted.

His injuries may have put an end to his service during World War II, but they did not put an end to his military career and his lifetime of fighting.

“I spent 30 years active duty and 54 retired,” White said, later adding, “I’m still here. I’m 104. Can’t complain.”

These days, White stays as busy as ever from his home in Stockton, California. The retired Marine enjoys scrapbooking and looking over the lifetime of memories he keeps on bookshelves in his room. His keepsakes are all organized by year.

“It’s kept me busy just trying to locate or keep track of what’s happened to me, where, when,” White explained.

WWII Vet Asks For Valentine’s Day Cards

Now the 104-year-old Purple Heart Recipient wants to expand his collection of memories with Valentine’s Day cards from all over the world.

“I’ll save every one of them like I’ve been saving little things that have come up until right now and they’ll be a personal part of my history,” White said.

When asked what the secret is to living a long life, the WWII Vet replied to “just keep breathing.”

“I can’t think of anything else. I can give you all sorts of ideas and suggestions but if you’re not breathing, they don’t mean anything,” he said.
