Jose Aldo

Plenty of people have expressed concerns about Jose Aldo’s condition, as he gets set to make his bantamweight debut, and his appearance at UFC 245’s media day didn’t silence those voices. But, the legendary, former featherweight champ says he’s never had an easier weight cut.

Aldo claims it’s the easiest weight cut of his career

After the Brazilian star came up short against Alexander Volkanovki this past May, he announced he was moving down to 135. The news surprised many, since Aldo had talked about moving up to lightweight at some juncture.

More recently, as Aldo’s fight with Marlon Moraes this nears, a photo of the legend prompted concerns about his health.  Darren Till questioned whether Aldo will be able to make 135, and Urijah Faber believes the star’s cut could be going awry.

Well, while talking to the media on Thursday, Aldo had this to say about his much-discussed, weight cut (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“If you guys can see my face everything went amazing,” Aldo said through an interpreter at media day. “I’m really excited, I’m really anxious actually to fight and perform. As you guys can see I can make weight very easy. Tomorrow morning I’m going to be the first one on the scale.”

“I believe in my team, I trust my team and we’ve got a nutritionist and we’ve been working diligently with a nutritionist,” Aldo said. “The weight cut has been the easiest I’ve had in my life. I’ve never felt that strong, that fast. It reignited a new Jose Aldo. The old Jose Aldo is dead. It’s a new person, give me new goal. I want to continue to make history and be a legend of the sport. We’ll be the champ at 135.”

Hopefully, everything goes according to plan and Aldo is good to go for his bout with Moraes. What do you think? Was Aldo’s appearance at media day cause for concern?

Aldo says he’s “reborn”

Not only did Aldo insist that his cut is going fine, but the renowned fighter said his passion for fighting’s been reinvigorated by the move.

“It reignited my passion to be champion,” Aldo said. “The last time I felt this quick and this explosive I was in the WEC so many years ago. I feel very young, I feel reborn like a new Jose Aldo. It’s the best thing I could’ve done. I’m reignited and I have the passion to be here. Mark my words: I’ll be the next 135-pound champion of the world.”

We’ll see what happens. If Aldo can score a decisive win over Moraes, there’s no question his path to a title shot is shorter than most fighters, on account of his storied run at 145.

UFC 245 will be hosted by T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
