Tyron Woodley Says Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington Made Him “Want to Throw Up”

Chances are most people would say last weekend’s bout between Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington delivered on the hype, as it featured plenty of exchanges and also, a pretty memorable finish. But, while the fight may have been really entertaining, Tyron Woodley wasn’t impressed with the skills he saw at work.

Woodley trashes Usman vs. Covington

The UFC 245 headliner was contested almost entirely on its feet, and Usman ended up finishing Covington with a late flurry in round five. Heading into the final round, one judge had it three rounds to one for Usman, another had it the same for Covington, and another had it two-two. It was a tightly contested fight with no shortage of action, and it was revealed afterward that Covington had sustained a broken jaw earlier in the fight.

Well, since then, Woodley weighed-on on the bout during The Hollywood Beatdown, and here’s some of what the former welterweight champ had to say (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Kamaru won the fight, broke Colby’s jaw. Colby I thought was winning the fight by a little small margin,” Woodley said.” “Wasn’t impressed, my man. I was really disgusted. I want to throw up, the fact that I lost to Usman.”

“If I would have punched Colby, he may be on life support right now,” Woodley said. “Like when I’m looking at how many punches those guys took, I was impressed with their durability. I was impressed by the fact that they kept doing it over and over again.

“But as far as IQ, moving your (expletive) head maybe to the side so the punch misses your head, I didn’t see a lot of that. I was surprised I didn’t see a lot of wrestling, I thought I was going to see a lot, a lot of wrestling.”

Reaction?

The fact neither man really looked to take the fight down did catch a lot of people by surprise. As both Usman and Covington are accomplished wrestlers. That said, and others also noted this, we’ve seen plenty of bouts in the past where due to the wrestling abilities of both fighters, the wrestling is a wash, and a stand-up bout ensues.

So, while both Usman and Covington have improved their striking significantly over the years, neither are being named in ‘best striker’ debates these days. So, some may agree with Woodley’s take here (and there’s no denying that Woodley punches ridiculously hard).

All that said, Usman did dominate Woodley back in March, so chances are not everyone’s going to be on side with the latter. The question is, will Woodley get the chance to prove any of this? Either in a rematch with Usman or a showdown with Covington?
