Kamaru Usman

Conor McGregor is preparing to face Donald Cerrone in a welterweight clash next month, and he’s also interested in fighting welterweight contender, Jorge Masdvidal. But, if the former featherweight and lightweight champ plans to take a run at the UFC’s 170 title, Kamaru Usman has told the star to think again.

Usman tells McGregor to “sit down”

A recent tweet from McGregor that only feature “145. 155. 170.”, was viewed by many as the former champ-champ stating he intends to win the UFC’s welterweight title. The fact McGregor is also interested in fighting Masvidal, has also furthered speculation that the Irish fighter may be targeting the welterweight crown.

Well, following his stoppage win over Colby Covington this past weekend at UFC 245, Usman spoke with TMZ Sports. When asked about McGregor’s tweet, the welterweight champ said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“He must want to die,” Usman said. “I mean like, what? He must want to die. This is not ’45, ’55. Like I will – you saw what Khabib (Nurmagomedov) did to him. Like, I’m – oh, my God. It wouldn’t even be fair if I fought Conor.”

“Much respect to Conor for what he’s done for this sport and transcended it but nah, this ain’t what you want,” Usman said. “You just sit down, little man, sit down. Learn to walk before you can run because I would hurt that guy.”

So, Usman’s take here shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, McGregor isn’t a natural welterweight, and he was outmatch by Nurmagomedov’s wrestling. While one could argue that Khabib is a better wrestler overall than Usman, the latter’s wrestling game has delivered him plenty of victories. In addition to the fact that he’s much bigger than Khabib.

But is McGregor seriously thinking about making a title run at 170?

All that aside, is McGregor really, planning to go for the welterweight belt? It’s very likely that in his mind, it’s an achievable goal. But, he’s also made it clear that he wants to rematch Khabib next year as well. So, there’s a lot of big hurdles in front of McGregor that he needs to get over, before a title run at 170 is a possibility.
