Following the news that Henry Cejudo is dropping the flyweight title, he’s repeated his call for a fight with Jose Aldo. But, Pedro Munhoz has added his name to the list of folks who don’t think that bout should happen.
Aldo made his much discussed, drop to bantamweight at UFC 245, and lost via split decision to Marlon Moraes. After the bout, UFC President Dana White reported that Cejudo thought Aldo won the fight, and that further, he wants to face the former featherweight champ next. White also said he was open to the bout.
Well, more recently it’s been reported that Cejudo is dropping the flyweight title and he will focus on his reign at 135. In a recent story from ESPN, the decorated wrestler was quoted saying this:
“I want to smash the so-called ‘King of Rio’ [Aldo], and anybody and everybody at 135 pounds. I saved the flyweight division, but they’re not saved from my wrath, because my name is still ‘Triple C.’ Allow me to remind anyone who has forgot: I am the Olympic, flyweight and bantamweight champion of the world.”
Meanwhile, in a recent report from MMA Junkie, Munhoz had this to say about Cejudo and his wish to fight Aldo:
“I understand we get hurt, and things happen, but being hurt he’s holding two belts,” Munhoz said. “I understand he’s hurt, there’s nothing we can do about it, but I’m glad they made that decision (to relinquish) and let the flyweights do their thing.”
“Cejudo is the bantamweight champion, and it looks like he wants to fight Jose Aldo,” Munhoz said. “And that’s the reason why I called out Jose Aldo, because it made no sense him being No. 9 in the rankings and then fighting for the title after losing his most recent fight (against Marlon Moraes at UFC 245), so you know, it’s something that’s part of the politics that I’m not aware of.”
Now, even if you believe Aldo outscored Moraes at UFC 245, you can likely see where Munhoz is coming from here. After all, there are other bantamweights, like Petr Yan, who are on big runs and deserve a title shot. Aljamain Sterling has won four straight, and depending on when he’s ready to fight again following wrist surgery, he’s also in the mix.
But, as we all know, the UFC is in the fight game to make money, and Cejudo – Aldo is likely the biggest fight for him right now.
