Bob and Corrine Johnson got married as teenagers. And enjoyed nearly 7 decades of wedded bliss. This couple did seemingly everything together throughout their 68 years of marriage. Which is why their son says it’s no coincidence that the loving couple died just a day apart.
Both Bob and Corrine grew up in the shadow of the Minnesota dairy farm where they would live and raise their seven children together. Each of them was raised within three miles of the home they would one day call their own.
The 88 year old man and his 87 year old wife lived independently in their farm house until about six months ago. That’s when Bob got cancer and ended up in the hospital . It wasn’t long until Corrine joined him there with congestive heart failure.
“They went on their terms,” their youngest son Brent said.
They sure did.
Days before she passed away, Corrine kissed her husband on the forehead, whispering to him, “I love you.”
“When mom passed, they pulled the curtain between the two beds, he just stared at the curtain,” the Johnson’s daughter Beth Kinkeade said.
Tears welled up in the newly widowed man’s eyes and then he very quickly took a turn for the worse.
Bob was a true gentleman, always opening the doors for others and always letting his wife go first. This held true throughout their 68-year marriage right until the end of their lives.
Corrine went first and Bob shortly followed.
Son Bruce Johnson is a cancer doctor. He is well versed in this disease and thought it wasn’t his dad’s time yet. He was wrong. Bob would join Corrine at the pearly gates just thirty-three hours later.
“I sort of thought he looked like he could go for weeks,” Dr. Johnson said. “As soon as mom died he went downhill and died in a day. It’s hard to imagine it’s a coincidence.”
As the Johnson children are suddenly left to cope with the loss of both parents, they find comfort in knowing that they went out their own way. Together.
Daughter Lora Dennis said the siblings fretted about how their surviving parent would cope after the other one passed away. But, with their parents this was not something they needed to worry about.
“Their plan was to not have us worry about that,” Lora said.
Typical of the Greatest Generation, the Johnsons took their marriage vows very seriously. Their lives were interwoven at every level and that bond lasted until their took their last breath.
