UFC 244: Jorge Masvidal is Still Down to Fight Conor McGregor “Over All These Other Bums”

Names like Donald Cerrone and Justin Gaethje have been tied to conversations lately about Conor McGregor’s next fight. But, that doesn’t mean Jorge Masvidal wouldn’t jump at the chance to fight the controversial star down the line.

Masvidal’s previous campaign to fight McGregor

After Masvidal took out Ben Askren in record time fashion at UFC 239, “Gamebred” made it clear he wanted to fight for the welterweight title next. But, Masvidal also said he’d be more than willing to fight McGregor. UFC President Dana White said he wasn’t interested in having McGregor face a welterweight like Masvidal, however, and the latter wasn’t shy about sharing/spinning those comments.

Masvidal’s latest comments about facing McGregor

Well, fast forward to now and Masvidal’s booked to fight Nate Diaz tonight at UFC 244, Colby Covington is set to fight the 170 champ Kamaru Usman on December 14th, and Cerrone is the front-runner to fight McGregor.

But, while talking to the media this week the topic of a bout with McGregor came up again, and here’s some of what Masvidal had to say (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Conor’s done amazing things in this sport, and I always give – not always – but I try to give credit where credit is due,” Masvidal said. “He’s got two belts, he’s got the fastest knockout with the title, he’s done a lot of great things, you know. But as of late, he hasn’t competed in a while. I’m just hearing things; I’m not seeing. If he comes back and fights, fights whoever he fights and wins, and wants to fight me, of course I’m going to fight that guy over everybody just like I’m going to fight Nate, because Nate’s a huge dog.”

“Conor’s the same. He’s a fighter,” Masvidal said. “He might not be the toughest guy, but he’s a hell of a fighter, and he brings in millions of dollars, so of course I’m going to fight that guy over all these other bums. It’s a no-brainer, man. But is he fighting? I don’t know.”

Could we see Masvidal vs. McGregor down the line? It’s possible.

More recently, White had talked about the possibility of McGregor fighting Diaz or Masvidal. But, as noted above, the UFC is trying to book a  bout between McGregor and Cerrone. If Masvidal beats Diaz today, chances are he’ll be tapped to face the winner of Usman – Covington. So, some things have to play out, and play out in a certain way over the coming months, for McGregor vs. Masvidal to materialize.

UFC 244 will be hosted by Madison Square Garden in New York City.
