Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz II? Coach Says “We’d See The Same Thing”

Following the disappointing conclusion to the UFC 244 headliner between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, the latter has made it very clear he wants an immediate rematch. But, while Masvidal’s coach Mike Brown has praised Diaz for his toughness and heart, he doesn’t believe a second fight will be any more competitive.

Masvidal’s impressive, but somewhat controversial win

Early on into their highly anticipated fight, it looked like Masvidal might take Diaz out in the opening round. After “Gamebred” blasted Diaz with heavy elbow, he followed up with a headkick and shots from above that bloodied the Stockton star.

Diaz managed to survive and landed some heavy shots of his own in rounds two and three. But, Masvidal outscored him in both frames. After the third round, the doctors ruled Diaz could not continue due to a massive cut he had his over his right eye. That decision didn’t sit well with Diaz or many observers, and as a result, there’s been calls for a rematch (UFC President Dana White said afterward the doctors likely made the right call).

Brown comments on Masvidal – Diaz

Well, since UFC 244, the aforementioned Brown spoke with MMA Fighting. While discussing Masvidal’s performance, and the possibility of a rematch with Diaz, the American Top Team coach said this:

“That first minute was crazy. He hurt him bad with that elbow and he fell over and then [Jorge] hit him with that head kick. I can’t believe he took it,” Brown said. “Then Jorge was landing some heavy ground and pound. It was brutal stuff. A lot of heavy shots. Nate’s got an incredible chin and like Jorge said, he’s a dog. You have to kill him to get him out of there.”

“Honestly, it went a lot like we expected. We were confident. We thought [Jorge] was better in those areas…We thought Nate would be tough as hell. We thought it would be nearly impossible to put him away and everything kind of was as we expected.”

“I think we’d see the same thing,” said Brown, while discussing how he thinks a rematch would go. “That was pretty damn one-sided. He won all three rounds, all three were pretty one-sided. I think that’s how it’s always going to be.

“I mean on a good day Jorge gets him out of there, and on a bad day, maybe the rounds are a little closer but [Jorge] still wins them. That’s what I see.”

Now, Diaz believes he was coming on in the third and that he would have surged ahead in rounds four and five. Others have also argued that could have happened, if the fight would have continued.

But, there’s no denying that Masvidal looked great in the first three rounds, and that he won most of the exchanges. This could be why White’s said he’s not interested in having the two rematch right away.
