Israel Adesanya is Down For a Superfight With Stipe Miocic…

Israel Adesanya turned heads earlier this year by reporting he wants to fight light-heavyweight king Jon Jones. Well, now “The Last Stylebender’s” probably done so again, by saying he’s also interested in fight heavyweight champ, Stipe Miocic.

Adesanya’s comments about Jones

Earlier this year, after Adesanya defeated Anderson Silva at UFC 234 in February, the rising star proclaimed he was hunting for another G.O.A.T., namely Jones. The latter didn’t care for the comments, and Adesanya and Jones have traded verbal shots since.

Miocic versus Adesanya?

As you surely know, Adesanya is booked to fight middleweight champ Robert Whittaker this Saturday at UFC 243. In advance of the fight, Adesanya and his coach Eugene Bareman sat down with Submission Radio.

During the interview, Bareman brought up that he’d like to see Adesanya compete at heavyweight, if “The Last Stylebender” was to take a super fight (quotes via MMA Fighting). Adesanya proceeded to say:

“In boxing and kickboxing, I’ve stepped in weight in any code I’ve done in fighting. So yeah, there’s a reason why. Even in kickboxing, I stepped up in heavyweight. And it’s like he said, there are certain things we can take advantage of (at heavyweight). And people think I’m gonna have to put on size, but that’s cause they’re dumb, they don’t understand the game. I weighed in with full clothes and a box of Dunkin’ Donuts the last time I fought at heavyweight. And so I stayed the same weight, but I still packed a punch. And I even dropped the second guy, flatlined him.”

Bareman relayed:

“If they’re talking about you doing a superfight, then skip light heavyweight and go straight to heavyweight,” Bareman said. “No one’s done that. I think Stipe. Stipe would be the one I’d like to fight.”

To which the interim middleweight champ said:

“Yeah, definitely,” Adesanya agreed. “I like the way he’s thinking. [Everyone laughs]. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

How about that? Now, you have to admire Adesanya’s gameness here. But, the chances of this fight happening seem extremely slim. While Adesanya would vehemently says he’s not too small to fight Miocic, at the end of the day, he’s not even a big middleweight. So, a showdown with Jones seems much more likely, if Adesanya unifies the middleweight titles and defends the belt several times. There’s also some heat their already, as noted above. So the UFC would have that story line to work with.

UFC 243 will be hosted by Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
