Former UFC Champion Georges St-Pierre On Potential Return

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre continues to go to the gym and train nearly every single day.

However, that does not mean, at the moment, the UFC has come to St-Pierre with a contract to fight UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

They did, though, do just that at one time – things just didn’t work out for all sides involved.

“If the right fight came along,” St-Pierre told ESPN in a recent interview. “They know where to find me.”

GSP hasn’t competed since winning the UFC middleweight title in 2017 with a submission over Michael Bisping added “they tried to make the right fight, but it didn’t work out.”

He would confirm that “right fight” was with Nurmagomedov.

“If everything is aligned, contractually, as we speak now, yes I would (return),” said St-Pierre, who has won 13 consecutive fights.

The 38-year-old Canadian walked away from mixed martial arts for the first time in 2013 when he earned a split decision over Johny Hendricks to defend his welterweight title for a division record ninth time.

Four years later, GSP stepped back inside the Octagon and became the fourth multi-division UFC champion with a victory over Bisping. He is currently tied with Jon Jones for the most title fight wins at 13.

St-Pierre also holds UFC records for most decision wins (12), most takedowns (90), most successful welterweight title defenses (nine) and most consecutive welterweight title defenses (nine).

In the interview with ESPN, St-Pierre was joined by training partner and friend Artur Beterbiev, the reigning IBF boxing champion. When Beterbiev was asked if St-Pierre was retired, he said no, adding “he still does training every day.”

St-Pierre started his MMA career way back in 2002, signing with the UFC two years later. He earned a title shot at Matt Hughes for the belt, falling via submission with just a second left.

After picking up four wins, he bested BJ Penn via in 2006 in a title-eliminator to earn another shot at Hughes. This time, GSP finished him, landing with a head-kick to begin his first reign atop the division.

In 2007, St-Pierre was stunned by Matt Serra in one of the biggest upsets in MMA history at UFC 69.  He would claim the interim title later that year.

St-Pierre would unify the belts by avenging the loss to Serra in 2008.

St-Pierre also holds wins over Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, Jake Shields, Carlos Condit and Dan Hardy during his career. He also defeated Penn again in a champion vs. champion match in 2009.
