UFC 245: Alexander Volkanovski Says He’s “Already Looking Through” Fight With Champ Max Holloway

Recently the UFC announced that Alexander Volkanovski is going to challenge Max Holloway at UFC 245, and in a recent interview, “The Great” one made it clear he’s not short on confidence heading into the bout. In fact, Volkanovski reported that he’s already “looking through” the upcoming fight and that he’s certain he’ll be victorious.

Volkanovski’s UFC run

The Australian fighter has finally been granted a shot at the featherweight title, after going 7-0 in the UFC to date. After Volkanovski took out Chad Mendes in December, there was calls for him to get a title shot, but it didn’t happen. Then, after he defeated the legendary Jose Aldo in May be decision, Volkanovski and a chorus of others campaigned for his title shot. The UFC, however, opted to go with Frankie Edgar, and Holloway proceeded to defeat the former lightweight champ in July.

“The Great” one’s recent comments

Well, recently the UFC confirmed that Volkanovski will face Holloway at UFC 245 on December 14th in Las Vegas. Since then, the well rounded fighter spoke with EMG Access, and here’s some of what Volkanovski had to say about the Holloway fight (quotes via BJ Penn.com).

“I’m going to show the world that I’m the best featherweight. I’m the best featherweight in the world, and I’m going to show that December 14th,” Volkanovski said.

“People can say whatever they want. He’s been a great champion. If he wants a rematch again — I’m already looking through this. I know I’m winning. I’m taking that belt. If they want a rematch I’ll do that. I’ll beat him again and solidify I’m the best in the world. Then everyone can just jump on board.”

How about that? Now, these comments may prompt some folks to think Volkanovski is underestimating Holloway. Could that be the case? It’s possible. But, it would be kind of surprising if that were the case.

After all, Holloway is coming off a win over Edgar, who has the wrestling pedigree that many people argued might play a key role in ending his reign. Not only that, in Holloway we’re talking about a guy who has defeated many, all-star fighters, including Aldo, Cub Swanson, Anthony Pettis, Brian Ortega and Jeremy Stephens among others.

That said, Volkanovski has said he believes he’s capable of inflicting more damage, and he’s also cited his own wrestling skills, while discussing what it will take to beat Holloway. Further, on account of what he’s done in the UFC to date, it’s not shocking to hear that Volkanovski’s extremely confident heading into UFC 245. Yes, even if he’s facing one of the best, if not the best featherweight of all time.
