Valentina Shevchenko avenged her 2010 loss to Liz Carmouche tonight at UFC Uruguay, as the flyweight champ’s striking and top game ruled the day.

Round one

Both women were fairly reserved in the early going. Shevchenko missed with a head kick and then scored with a kick to the leg. Shevchenko scored with a left and threw a spinning kick to the midsection moments later. Carmouche largely looked to counter and as the final minute wound down, some whistles rang out.

Round two

Shevchenko picked up the pace in round two and Carmouche shot in a couple of minutes in but was denied. Shevchenko planted a nice left moments later, but neither woman was landing that much. Shevchenko flurried in as the final minute approached, and then with less than 30 seconds, she landed a couple more punches. More whistling could be heard as the round ended.

Round three

Similar to the other rounds, the third round did not feature much action early on. A couple of minutes in, however, Shevchenko flurried in and Carmouche went down to her back. Shevchenko elected to not engage Carmouche on the ground, and the fight was restarted standing. In an ensuing clinch, Shevchenko swept Carmouche to the floor. Shevchenko landed a few shots to the body before the round ended.

Round four

Shevchenko scored several times with a nice combo not long into the frame. Carmouche shot in but Shevchenko wound up on top. Carmouche started working rubber guard from the bottom. Shevchenko wasn’t able to do much from the top and the fight was eventually re-started standing. Carmouche charged in, Shevchenko countered with a spinning elbow and the fight went back to the floor. Shevchenko took the top position once again and finished the frame on top.

Round five

As round five began, there was no question Carmouche would need a finish. Shevchenko continued to throw the odd combo, and Carmouche shot in nearly two minutes in. Once again, however, the champ sprawled nicely and took the top position. Carmouche fired in some heel strikes to the legs of Shevchenko from the bottom, and kept the champ close. Shevchenko started to work to pass, and moved into half guard. Shevchenko worked to her feet and threw some kicks to the legs of Carmouche, before the final horn went.

Clear cut win for the flyweight champ.
