Colby Covington

Colby Covington almost certainly locked up a bout tonight with welterweight champ Kamaru Usman, by outscoring Robbie Lawler by a wide margin at UFC Newark.

Covington charged out and both men winged big hooks. Covington shot in moments early but Lawler defended the initial attempt. Covington succeeded on his next attempt and moved to the back of Lawler. The latter momentarily got back to his feet but “Chaos” dragged him down again. Covington started hunting for a choke but Lawler rolled out and up. Covington kept pressuring and tripped Lawler to the floor. Lawler got back to his feet again, and the rounded ended as “Chaos” flurried in with punches.

Covington pressured in to begin round two and quickly took Lawler down again. The former champ got back to his feet, but, Covington scored with another takedown not long after. “Ruthless” popped right up, but yet again, Covington took him back down. Lawler worked his way up and out once more, but Covington offered much more volume on the feet. Lawler just looked to defend and roll, and didn’t throw much.

Covington took Lawler down shortly into round three, but Lawler got back to his feet. Covington scored with a hard left and shot in, but Lawler defended. Covington shot in moments later but was unable to take Lawler down. On the feet, Covington continued to ofter way more offense but Lawler tagged him with a hard right hook. Covington picked away with punches, and Lawler countered with a couple of nice jabs.

Covington pressured right out of the gate in round four, and continued to fire more often. Covington shot in moments later, but Lawler defended well. Covington’s relentless pace of strikes continued and Lawler avoided another TD attempt. After Covington poured on strikes he momentarily took Lawler down again.

Round five began with Covington almost certainly, up four rounds to none. Covington moved forward once more and scored with a knee to the chest. Covington shot in and pushed Lawler to the fence, but “Ruthless” rolled out. Covington landed another knee in the clinch, and Lawler fired back with a left. The latter dug to the body with punches, but Covington continued to outstrike the vet. Lawler planted a nice jab but Covington countered with more jabs of his own. Lawler just missed with a winging hook,  and Covington countered with a spinning back fist. Clear cut victory for Covington.
