Through three rounds, it didn’t look like Stipe Miocic’s chances of reclaiming the heavyweight title tonight were very good. But, the rugged heavyweight ended up stopping Daniel Cormier late into the UFC 241 headliner.
Round one
Cormier fired in a hard leg kick moments in, but Miocic checked the second one. Cormier scored with another leg kick moments later and Miocic followed up with a couple of inside kicks of his own. Cormier threatened with a couple of big punches not long after and “DC” shot in. As Miocic tried to defend, Cormier lifted him up and slammed him to the ground. Cormier started working from the top and in the final minute, he scored with a couple of shots from above. Miocic started working his way out and Cormier started firing in hammer fists. Miocic got back to his feet right before the round ended, and started working for a TD, but ate some elbows for his efforts.
Round two
Miocic came out pressuring in round two and landed a couple of knees to the body. Cormier planted a right and then elbow moments later. Cormier scored with another right not long after, and then Miocic may have taken an eye poke. Miocic scored with a couple of rights but “DC” continued to move forward and fired in shots of his own. Miocic landed a couple of nice jabs and they started trading shots in the pocket. Cormier briefly clinched up but the trading in the pocket ensued. Miocic fired in a kick to the body and “DC” fired back with a head kick. Replay after the round appeared to show Miocic took a thumb to the eye.
Round three
Miocic tagged Cormier with a right not long into round three. Miocic went for a TD but “DC” defended. Cormier scored with several jabs that had Miocic wincing. Miocic clinched up and pushed Cormier to the cage, and then missed with a spinning elbow. Cormier picked up the pace, but Miocic took him down moments later with a nice sweep. “DC” got right back to his feet and followed up with a nice combo. Cormier planted a hard right seconds later and Miocic’s face was starting to wear it.
Round four
Miocic moved forward to begin round four but “DC” followed up thumping hooks moments later. Miocic dug to the body with a hook, and moments later, he did so again that appeared to hurt “DC”. Not long after, Miocic fired in another body shot. Cormier continued to move forward and scored with a right. Miocic fired in another punch to the liver of Cormier that hurt the decorated wrestler, and then he cracked “DC” with a booming right that stunned the legend. Miocic followed up with more punches that sent Cormier crumpling to the deck, and that was that. Miocic is the champ once again. Wow.
Afterward, Cormier said he’s going to talk with his wife about his future in fighting.
