Robbie Lawler Hasn’t Lost “Ruthless” Edge, Despite Colby Covington’s Verbal Shots

Although Robbie Lawler is one of the most respected fighters in the game, not surprisingly, that didn’t stop Colby Covington from taking some verbal jabs at “Ruthless” leading up to their bout today. Well, if any of the comments got under Lawler’s skin, as per usual, the former welterweight champ isn’t showing it.

After today’s match-up was announced, “Chaos” said he was going to make Lawler pay for betraying American Top Team. According to Covington, Lawler decided to leave the team after the renowned camp put a photo up of Tyron Woodley, following his win over “Ruthless” in 2016. The argument being, according to Covington, that Lawler turned his back on the team that made him who he is.

Well, of course, Lawler’s been asked to respond to Covington’s comments, or whether they’ve bothered him (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I left [American Top Team] and it is what it is. He wanted a storyline,” Lawler said. “People ask a lot of questions, especially with this fight going on. Whatever. It is what it is. I’m good to go.”

“I just ignore it. I don’t really follow what people are saying, what people are doing,” Lawler said. “I don’t pay attention to that stuff. I focus on how I can get better, focus on my family, eating right, making sure I get the right amount of sleep. Those are the things I focus on.

“I can’t really worry about what everybody else is doing nor does it affect me at all. I just try to be me and keep moving on.”

Classic  Lawler. Now, some may argue that Covington didn’t really go full out with his “Chaos” bit this time around, in terms of trashing Lawler. If he had, however, would it have made a difference? Probably not.

At the end of the day, there’s a chance Lawler has put some of Covington’s comments in the ole’ memory bank, and he’s looking forward to making him pay. Case in point, if you watched the two faceoff Friday, Lawler was far from all smiles.

All this aside, today’s bout is a massive one for both men. Covington needs a win to secure a title shot, and if Lawler takes the bout, and does so in decisive fashion, he’ll jump back into the title shot mix himself.

UFC Newark will be hosted by the Prudential Center.
