ONE Championship’s “Dawn of Heroes” saw both Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez earn spots in the flyweight and lightweight grand prix finals, respectively. But, both of the former UFC champs had some rough spots in their bouts.
Johnson took on Tatsumitsu Wada in his semifinal bout, and the latter’s size advantage was clear right out of the gate. Early on, Wada was able to take Johnson’s back, and he had the dynamic fighter on the defensive for much of the opening round.
Johnson, however, battled back in rounds two and three and grappled his way to a decision win.
Alvarez, meanwhile, took on former ONE lightweight champ Eduard Folayang. Not long into the fight, the latter dropped Alvarez with a thumping leg kick and then poured on shots from above. Alvarez was able to weather the storm, and after scoring a nice sweep, he sunk in a fight ending, rear-naked-choke.
