Michael Bisping: Jose Aldo – Conor McGregor 2 is “The Fight to Make”

Conor McGregor has made it clear that he wants to rematch Khabib Nurmagomedov next, but recently Michael Bisping outlined why the star should throw hands with Jose Aldo one more time.

Ever since McGregor was tapped by Nurmagomedov last October, he’s insisted a rematch with the lightweight champ would go differently. While McGregor has expressed an interest in fighting the likes of Donald Cerrone, in more recent weeks, he’s resumed picking away at Khabib’s victory.

Well, as Nurmagomedov gets set to fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 242, September 7th, it’s still not clear who and when McGregor will fight next. Nurmagomedov has scoffed at the idea that McGregor deserves another title shot (he hasn’t won a MMA fight since 2016), and Tony Ferguson has done everything and then some to earn that opportunity.

Bisping recently weighed-in on the situation during an episode of the Believe You Me podcast. The former middleweight champ opined that McGregor is “praying” Poirier beats Khabib, so that he has a more compelling claim for a title shot. McGregor defeated Poirier back in 2014.

While Bisping didn’t rule out the possibility of the UFC going with Nurmagomedov – McGregor 2, he had this to say about a second match-up with Aldo (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“That’s the fight to make, if I’m honest,” Bisping said. “Listen, Conor’s got to get back in the winning circle. If he fights Khabib, more than likely that’s not gonna happen. Could he catch him with a good shot and rock him and follow it up? Yeah, of course he could. But more than likely Khabib’s gonna take his best shot, he’s gonna take him down, and we’re gonna have a replay of what happened last time.

“Aldo and McGregor, the buildup to that fight was huge and it ended amazingly in 13 seconds and well done to McGregor. I think people would love to see that because a lot of people feel that Aldo can do better in the rematch and that’s definitely a very winnable fight for Conor. We saw what happened the first time. . .

“That makes sense. Aldo’s coming off a loss, McGregor’s coming off a loss. Pair them together, Madison Square Garden, there’s your main event, winner gets a title shot.”

It’s a really interesting idea, and Bisping apparently also said that he’s heard a rumour Aldo – McGregor 2 is being considered. So, we’ll see what happens.

The question is,however, because McGregor quickly took out Aldo in 2015, and since the latter is coming off a loss to Alexander Volkanovski, is the former champ-champ interested in that bout?
