Jorge Masvidal

One of the big storylines emerging from UFC 241 was Nate Diaz’s callout of Jorge Masvidal, and if you’ve been crossing your fingers for the fight to happen, well, so far, things are looking good.

Jorge Masvidal

Diaz’s triumphant return

Diaz returned to the Octagon this past weekend for the first time since August, 2016, when he lost his rematch with Conor McGregor via decision. The Stockton star took on former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis in a welterweight contest, and won the fight via UD.

Diaz’s long awaited return and victory was enough to buzz the MMA world twice over, but, the outspoken fighter took it up a notch by calling for a fight with Masvidal. The callout fired around the internet, as it’s a fight that any fan would love to see. Not only because of each man’s abilities and aggressive styles, but because of their tell it like it is personalities.

Masvidal’s manager weighs-in

Well, Masvidal’s manager Abe Kawa appeared on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show Monday, and of course, he was asked about Diaz – Masvidal. Here’s some of what Kawa had to say about the all-star match-up and the possibility of it materializing (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I believe so. I believe that’s a good fight, I think both of these guys will go on, put on a show for everybody and I think that’s what we all want,” Kawa said. “I’m a fight fan at heart, before everything else and if you’re a fight fan, this is like Christmas for everybody. . .

“Right after the fight, I had a brief conversation with the higher-ups and it looks like they like the fight. That being said, we should be getting together sometime this week to see how that goes.”

“I think December in Vegas is probably where he would prefer it,” Kawa said, while discussing possibilities for a timeline and location. “Actually, he wants to go to Cali where Nate’s from. I don’t want to give too much, I’d rather it come from Jorge than me, so I’ll try to keep it as simple as possible. But he looks at this fight more like the [Darren] Till [fight]; he’s gonna go into someone else’s backyard and he prefers that over anything else. So if Vegas is the closest thing he could get to Cali, then, you know, Vegas.”

So, this is welcome news, and really, it shouldn’t come as a shock. Diaz has become one of the biggest names in the game, and since he’s driving for a bout, which hasn’t always been the case in recent years, it’s hard to imagine why the UFC wouldn’t get this done. Barring, of course, financial demands from the fighters the promotion doesn’t want to meet. But this is the type of fight – you would think – where everyone wins money wise.
