Frankie Edgar

Recently Frankie Edgar confirmed that he’s planning a drop to bantamweight. But, it looks like that could change real quick, if a fight with Conor McGregor gets tabled.

Edgar’s plans for bantamweight

Following Edgar’s loss to featherweight champ Max Holloway at UFC 240 last month, the legendary fighter announced he plans to move to 135.  The news didn’t come as a massive shock, as for years, there’s been talk about whether Edgar might drop to bantamweight. After all, Edgar is just 5’6 tall, and he was never a big featherweight, and that’s pretty impressive, when you consider he was the lightweight champ.

McGregor’s recent comments

Well, recently McGregor spoke with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. While discussing when and who he might fight next, the former featherweight and lightweight champ had this to say about Edgar (quote via MMA Junkie):

“You know who else is at the top of the list: Frankie Edgar is also up there, right there at the top of the list,” McGregor said. “Because he has similarities to Khabib (Nurmagomedov), runs on the back foot, shoots on the single leg. I want these types of similar bouts, and also Frankie has been very respectful. Frankie has always been respectful. He said that he wanted to say, ‘I want to tell my grandkids that I fought Conor McGregor one day,’ and for me to hear that, ask Dana (White), for me when I hear that, this is going back many months he said that, I messaged Dana straight away and said that’s the fight to make.”

It was interesting to hear McGregor mention Edgar, since the latter recently announced plans to compete at bantamweight. But, not long after, Edgar shared out this response:

You know I’m down to fight @thenotoriousmma it should have happened a long time ago. I know I’m going down to Bantam weight but for you any weight class will do. Anytime any weight class you know I’m game. @danawhite @seanshelby

Classic Edgar. One of the gamest and toughest fighters the sport has ever known. But, will Edgar – McGregor happen? You would think the odds lean to no.

After all, not long ago Dana White shot down the possibility of a fight between McGregor and Jorge Masvidal, by citing the latter is too big. Now, yes, Edgar has competed at 155 before. But, out of all the options out there for McGregor, would the UFC have him fight an undersized Frankie? Over say, bouts with the winner of Donald Cerrone – Justin Gaethje or even Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Dustin Poirier? Even a rematch with Max Holloway at 155 seems more plausible right?

But, you never know. Edgar has done a lot for the UFC and if both fighters push for this match-up, it could happen.
