Frankie Edgar couldn’t end Max Holloway’s reign as the featherweight champ at UFC 240, in what marked the third time he’s been unable to win a title fight at 145. While the former lightweight champ is devastated on account of the loss, Edgar isn’t ashamed of how he performed.
Edgar pressured Holloway throughout much of the bout, but the champ outstruck him on a consistent basis and shut down his wrestling game. After the unanimous decision loss, Edgar had this to say about the fight (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“I’m heartbroken,” Edgar said. “It’s tough when you want something really that bad and you can’t get it. I’ve been close so many times before.”
“I’m pissed off, a little disappointed, but I’m proud of my performance. I’m just disappointed in letting my team down, you know? I know they’re proud of me, but you always want to deliver a victory to them because they sacrifice so much as well.”
“…“You’re gonna lose in life if you let it keep you down,” Edgar said. “And I’ve lost before, it’s what it is, it’s never held me back.”
Although it was clear Holloway had won the fight after 25 minutes, it wasn’t like Edgar was blown out of the water in the scrap. So, in other words, Edgar should be proud of how he performed against one of the greatest featherweights of all time.
Now it will be interesting to see what comes next for the 37-year-old star. Edgar said he intends to fight again, so, could he finally drop down to 135?
