Max Holloway Takes Poke at Conor McGregor’s Championship Reigns

It remains to be seen whether Conor McGregor and Max Holloway will ever fight again, but, it certainly seems like the stars will continue to trade verbal jabs.

The fighters have never been characterized as bitter rivals or anything like that, but in more recent years, the two have verbally sparred. The two fought way back in 2013, and McGregor won the fight via unanimous decision. Since then, Holloway’s gone on to become one of the greatest featherweights the game has seen, and McGregor has won both the UFC’s 145 and 155 titles.

Well, recently Holloway attended a media luncheon, ahead of his July 27th bout with Frankie Edgar. While discussing the bottle cap challenge that he and McGregor both participated, “Blessed” said this (quote via MMA Mania):

“McGregor’s? If you talk about it, Conor when he kicked it, his bottle cap when straight off. Mine kept on spinning and spinning and stayed on,” said Holloway. “It is preferences. Some people win championship belts, some people defend them, it is whatever they want.”

How about that zinger huh? McGregor won the UFC’s 145 title in 2015, but never ended up defending the belt. Then, after winning the lightweight belt in 2016 by stopping Eddie Alvarez, McGregor opted to box Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017, and ultimately never defended that title eighter.

Last October, McGregor returned to the Octagon was submitted by the current lightweight champ, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Holloway, meanwhile, will be competing for the first time at UFC 240 since he lost via decision to Dustin Poirier at UFC 238 in June. That contest was for the interim lightweight title. UFC 240 will take place in Edmonton, Alberta.
