UFC 240: Frankie Edgar Reminds Doubters of What Happened at UFC 112

If you’re one of the people who don’t believe Frankie Edgar will lay claim to the UFC’s featherweight title on July 27th, the legend wants you to reflect on what he did at UFC 112.

Edgar is booked to face 145 champ Max Holloway at UFC 240, and as it stands right now, the former lightweight champ is a sizeable underdog. Depending on what betting line you look at, Edgar is the underdog with odds in the +300 to +350 range.

Well, recently the 37-year-old spoke with MMA Junkie. While discussing the fact he’s about to face the man who is widely considered to be the best featherweight on the planet, Edgar referenced his 2010 win over BJ Penn.

“Max keeps getting better and better every fight, but some guys just do stuff that they always do, and those are the things we’ve been working on since the very first camp we started getting ready for him,” Edgar said.

“A little over nine years ago, I fought a guy I wasn’t supposed to be in there with, who was supposed to wipe the mat with me, and I proved some people wrong. So this is definitely a familiar position for me.”

When Edgar faced Penn the first time around, the latter was the consensus, best lightweight in the game. Penn was so highly regarded at the time, that following his decision loss to Edgar at UFC 112, “The Prodigy” was granted an immediate rematch. Edgar went on to defend the 155 crown at UFC 118 by handing the former lightweight and welterweight champ another UD loss.

So, it’s certainly true that Edgar is no stranger to being an underdog, and that he’s proven his critics and doubters wrong before. Can he do so again at UFC 240 though? At this stage of his career? Against a man 10 years his junior? We shall see.

UFC 240 will take place in Edmonton, Alberta. Here is the line-up so far for the upcoming event.

145 lbs.: UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar
125 lbs.: Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Alexandre Pantoja
125 lbs.: Viviane Araujo vs. Alexis Davis
125 lbs.: Lauren Murphy vs. Mara Romero Borella
125 lbs.: Sarah Frota vs. Gillian Robertson
170 lbs.: Erik Koch vs. Kyle Stewart
