UFC 239: Amanda Nunes is Still Down to Fight Cris “Cyborg” Again

Although Amanda Nunes needed less than one minute to take out Cris “Cyborg” last December, it looks like the champ-champ would have zero issues, signing up for a rematch with the star.

Nunes faced “Cyborg” at UFC 232, and promptly secured the featherweight title, by putting away the renowned fighter with a flurry of punches. Since “Cyborg” hadn’t lost a MMA fight since 2005, and because of her status as one of the greatest female fighters, immediately there was some talk about a rematch.

While that’s not going to happen, as Nunes will defend the 135 title against Holly Holm at UFC 239, July 6th, the champ-champ recently said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I think this is the fight to make,” Nunes said.  “145 is bad right now – nobody in that division. Cyborg is always the most dominating woman on the planet if (she didn’t lose to me). That’s how it was, and she thinks she wants to prove something, but she knows she’s going to lose again. But I feel like she should make (the rematch).”

“Something happened,” Nunes said. “But I’m ready for the UFC – I’m hoping they’ll have the rematch. For some reason, she is going to fight (Shari Spencer instead of me) next. I don’t know why.”

So, we’ll see what happens. First things first, and “Cyborg” has to defeat Spencer at UFC 240 on July 27th. Then, the UFC needs to resign the former champ (and considering “Cyborg’s” somewhat turbulent relationship with White and the UFC over the years, that’s far from a given).

If all that happens, theoretically, the UFC could move forward with Nunes – “Cyborg” II, even if Amanda loses to Holm (as the 135 title isn’t on the line). Would fans be invested? Ya. Probably. Especially if “Cyborg” can score a one-sided win at UFC 240.

UFC 239 will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada (line-up via MMA Mania).
