If Donald Cerrone wins at UFC 238, and Conor McGregor comes calling for a fight, “Cowboy” won’t be signing up…
After Cerrone took out Alex Hernadez in January, he pushed hard for a fight with McGregor. The latter showed some interest, but the bout never came to be and Cerrone decided to fight Al Iaquinta last month. “Cowboy” won that fight via decision, and as a result, he was booked to throw hands with Tony Ferguson this Saturday.
Due to this backstory, Cerrone was recently asked about the possibility of fighting McGregor post-UFC 238, and the rugged fighter said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“No (I’m going to go with the title),” Cerrone said. “Conor’s had his shot. Sit your ass down now. (I’ll) take the belt.”
There you have it, and really, this shouldn’t come as too big of surprise. Cerrone has talked about the fact that via the new, pay-per-view model with ESPN+, his pay probably wouldn’t increase much by fighting McGregor. Now, if Cerrone were to win the UFC’s lightweight title, however, then his checks would definitely receive a boost. Not to mention adding a championship belt to his already stacked resume.
First things first, however, and that’s ending Ferguson’s 11 fight winning streak…
