Khabib Nurmagomedov

Even though Dustin Poirier is the UFC’s interim lightweight champ, there was still some talk (concern) that the promotion might look elsewhere for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s next bout. But, today, the promotion has announced that Nurmagomeodv – Poirier will indeed, headline UFC 242 on September 7th.

The champ Nurmagomedov (27-0) has not fought now since UFC 229 last October, when he tapped out Conor McGregor in the fourth round. Due to the post-fight brawl that ensued, after Nurmagomedov went after McGregor’s corner, the vaunted grappler was sidelined with a nine-month suspension.

Poirier (25-5) laid claim to the interim belt in April, by handing Max Holloway a decision loss at UFC 236. Although typically, interim champ’s advance to fight the reigning champ, there was always debate as to whether the UFC might decide to hand McGregor a rematch after all (although, Khabib repeatedly said McGregor didn’t deserve it).

So, there you have it. Khabib’s next bout is finally signed.
