Jessica Andrade

It wasn’t looking good for Jessica Andrade in the opening round of her bout with Rose Namajunas, but the Brazilian took the strawweight title in emphatic fashion at UFC 237.

Namajunas came out with a ton of movement and she cut Andrade open early with quick punches. Namajunas’ hand speed advantage was very apparent early on, and after Andrade ate more shots, she clinched up. Andrade picked the champ up and went for a slam, but Namajunas countered nicely with an armbar attempt. The action spilled to the floor late in the round, and Namajunas was on top. Andrade worked her way out, however,  and continued to press forward.

Andrade came out aggressively in round two and winged big hooks. Namajunas looked to counter and offered the odd stance switch. Namajunas threatened with a level change mid-round but Andrade defended. Moments later, Andrade picked Namajunas high in the air and slammed “Thug” on her head, and that was that. Thankfully, Namajunas appeared to be okay after the bout was called.
