Tony Ferguson

Following Donald Cerrone’s win over Al Iaquinta last weekend, there was no shortage of talk about “Cowboy” facing Conor McGregor next. But, ESPN is reporting that Cerrone is, in fact, going to battle Tony Ferguson at UFC 238.

The network’s Brett Okamoto and Ariel Helwani reported earlier on Friday that the bout was in the works, and now they’ve confirmed the fight’s set for June 8th. The booking is not far removed from reports that Ferguson’s recent meeting with UFC officials went well, and that his Octagon return would be finalized soon.

Ferguson (24-3) hasn’t fought since last October, when he scored a TKO win (corner stoppage) over Anthony Pettis. The former interim lightweight champ has won 11 straight.

Prior to his win over Iaquinta last weekend, Cerrone (36-11, 1 no-contest) took out Alex Hernandez in January. The veteran fighter has won three in a row and is 3-2 in his last 5.

So, obviously, this is a huge addition to the UFC’s summer schedule. Now you have to wonder what could be next for McGregor? Recently Dana White had said a bout with Cerrone made “sense”.

UFC 238 will take place in Chicago, Illinois.
