Chris Rock Obliterates Jussie Smollett During NAACP Awards

During the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night, Chris Rock took aim at disgraced star Jussie Smollett, who was nominated for an award but did not show up to the ceremony.

“They said ‘No Jussie Smollett jokes’ … What a waste of light skin. Do you know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here! I’d be running Hollywood,” Rock said, according to Fox News. “What the hell was he thinking? You’re ‘Jessie’ from now on. You don’t get the ‘u’ no more. That ‘u’ was respect. You ain’t getting no respect from me!”

Smollett was nominated for best supporting actor in a television drama for his role as Jamal Lyon on the Fox television show “Empire,” but he did not win the award.

This comes days after Chicago prosecutors controversially dropped all charges against Smollett, who was facing 48 years in prison for falsely reporting that he was the victim of a hate crime. Many were outraged that the charges were dropped, as they believe that Smollett deserves to be in prison for what he did. Chicago PD Commander Ed Wodnicki spoke out afterwards to call the decision to dismiss the charges a “punch in the gut,” adding that they were prepared for trial and had a “rock solid case.”

“For states attorney at this point to dismiss charges without discussing this with us at all is just shocking,” he lamented.

Before the NAACP awards, host Anthony Anderson had expressed his hopes that Smollett would win.

“I hope he wins,” Anderson said. “I’m happy for him that the system worked for him in his favor because the system isn’t always fair, especially for people of color. So I’m glad it worked out for him.”

“It’s not my place or any other person’s place to judge him or what not, but I’m glad that he’s nominated,” he added. “I hope he wins because I’d be interested to hear his speech.”
